Ashton Jeanty Is Cleared for the Raiders' Opener — but Las Vegas Loses Brock Bowers

Vegas gets its franchise running back back with no injury designation, and loses its best pass-catching weapon in the same week.

The Las Vegas Raiders will have running back Ashton Jeanty for Sunday's season opener against the Miami Dolphins. Jeanty was cleared with no injury designation after spraining his ankle on August 23, an injury that hung over the Raiders' entire training camp and was, for a stretch, genuinely in doubt for Week 1. The relief is tempered by a late and unwelcome development on the other side of the ball: tight end Brock Bowers, comfortably the team's most dangerous receiving option, will miss the opener after a minor procedure on his meniscus. Las Vegas gains its best runner and loses its best target in the same week.

Jeanty's own description of the moment he got hurt explains why the mood around him has shifted from anxiety to optimism. "When I popped up, I had a sigh of relief. I knew it wasn't anything too bad, even though I couldn't put pressure on my foot," he said, adding that the scare reframed things for him: "Of course, anytime you have an injury you think about how much worse it could have been and it just gives you perspective. But of course, just glad it was something light." The injury was ultimately classified as a low ankle sprain rather than the high sprain that would have cost him weeks.

I feel really good. Super excited to go out there and play a good game with this team against the Dolphins.

Head coach Klint Kubiak was considerably less upbeat about Bowers, and notably direct about how the week turned. "I was optimistic earlier that Brock would be able to go. He is not. He'll be back soon," Kubiak said — an admission that the staff's own expectation changed late. Kubiak also described the offense as "still growing," and indicated Jeanty will be used in a timeshare alongside Mike Washington Jr. rather than carrying a full workload in his first game back from the ankle. That is a sensible plan on its own terms, though it becomes harder to execute if Miami forces Las Vegas to throw, which is precisely the situation Bowers' absence makes more dangerous.

The Raiders' week

Aug. 23

Jeanty sprains his ankle in training camp; the injury is later classified as a low sprain, not a high one.

Earlier this week

Kubiak says he is optimistic Brock Bowers will be available for the opener.

Friday

Jeanty is cleared with no injury designation. Bowers is ruled out after a minor meniscus procedure.

Our take: these two pieces of news pull hard in opposite directions, and the net effect is an offense that becomes far more predictable than Kubiak would like. With Bowers unavailable, Miami can commit more attention to the run without fearing the seam, which makes a timeshare backfield less about managing Jeanty's ankle and more about surviving a defense that knows what is coming. The encouraging read is that the injury Las Vegas feared most — a high ankle sprain for its franchise back — did not happen, and the one it actually got is described by its own head coach as short. The season does not hinge on Sunday, but the shape of this offense will be a lot clearer by Sunday evening.

The Raiders got the answer they wanted on Jeanty and the one they didn't on Bowers, all in the same 48 hours.

Week 1 Prediction: Score, Spread & Player Prop

Spread

A running back returning from a month-old ankle sprain into a timeshare, without the team's best receiving threat, argues for the under on Las Vegas's team total more than any side.

Over/Under

Lean under. Losing Bowers removes the element that most reliably turns Raiders drives into points.

Player prop

Jeanty's rushing attempts are the number to watch — Kubiak explicitly described a timeshare with Mike Washington Jr., which caps the ceiling on volume props regardless of how the game flows.
